Andover’s only digital literary magazine. Open-submission.

About Us:

The Pariah is a digital creative writing magazine started by Phillips Academy students to create an accessible and collaborative writing community on campus. Launched in the spring of 2021, The Pariah has since published 9 editions, 2 anthologies, and grown to 80+ members. We publish prose, poetry, screenplays, and everything in between. All submissions are considered anonymously with the purpose of eliminating biases and taking the pressure off submitting work. Additionally, writers are published on our website so that everyone can enjoy their work!

We are constantly growing to fit the needs of our writers, and we collaborate with other clubs to expand our reach. If you have ideas for us or want to join our team, please reach out to us on Instagram (@the_pariah_andover) or email us.

Events & More

Most recently, The Pariah has acquired $800+ in funding from the Abbot Academy Fund, which we used to host a 4-week writing workshop focusing on hybrid and experimental literature. Participants explored Dictee by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha.

Past cross-club events have included a science-fiction-based collaboration with the Andover Astronomy Club, where writers wrote prompts based on astronomy concepts, and astronomers experimented in writing!

Additionally, we host regular celebratory events for writers after each seasonal edition is published. At these ‘launch parties,’ writers and readers alike enjoy food and meet their peers while hearing beautiful writing shared aloud.

If your club would like to collaborate, feel free to reach out.

Our Process:

First, submit! We encourage everyone to submit writing, regardless of their level of experience.

Once a piece is assembled, it is assigned to an editor based on that editor’s expertise. The editors immediately reach out and introduce themselves to their writers. Our goal with this is to inspire collaboration and friendship between writers and editors. Then:

  1. Our editors implement a first round of comments within the week. Writers make edits.

  2. The Editor-in-Chief and the Head implement a second round of comments. Edits are made.

  3. Writers confirm their preferred name and whether it will be shared on their piece.

  4. Our technology manager publishes each piece on this website!
